Birthday Party!!

Last week was so busy...many assignments and part time job. However, the weekend was awesome!! We had a birthday party of Yuri and Haruka at the bar where I used to work. Ryoko, Mari, Keiko, Hiromitsu and me made cakes for each one, we knew Yuri can not eat sweet things like cake though. I was busy to serve drinks to my friends, but I had much fun and I was really happy that all of them had fun, too.

Let's do our best also this week!!

Studying Abroad

I met my friend who is the second year student at this university just now, and heard that he passed the exams for studying abroad(that is why I was late for this class for 1 minute? or more? anyway, I was too excited to hear the bell ring) You know, we do not have only a year to decide whether we will study abroad or not, and if we do, which countries and courses are on our lists.

I really want to study in U.K.! I have some friends from England and Wales, and they gave me lot of good impressions on my thought about their country. I never felt like visiting U.K. before I met them because I had no good image about it...like raining all the time and people are snobby, but now I think the way they live is great. They are proud of their countries and cultures and preserve them, and at the same time, they try to adapt new ideas. Maybe I just made up really good image about this country through the friendship with them, but anyway, I will go there this March, so I hope I can see a little more what this country is like.

Also, I think this is the time for me to be serious about it and my future. I do not like to be serious about everything(it must be impossible for me though) and those who are always too serious(so annoying), but you know, being always laid-back is also a problem. I have just done homework and passed tests, but now I need to think by myself and make some actions based on that. Oh it took so long time(almost 8 months since I became a student here!) to realize that and get really motivated about it.

Most of you have checked this page before, but I put this link. You can get some information about studying abroad programs here.

I got the picture of English flag here, and that of Wales at this website.

America, not Iran, is the problem

Today’s blog is a response to this letter.

First, the author makes his point by mentioning nuclear weapons in some countries. At least, Russia, The U.K., France, China and The U.S. have some officially. Then it is unfair that some countries can own nuclear weapons, but on the other hand, other countries like Iraq or Iran are attacked for possessing some. What he wants to say here is that in stead of making such an unfair situation, all nukes should be removed from world.

He also criticizes America for taking on a guardianship for the world. The biggest problem is that U.S. government takes it based on only America’s viewpoint, in other words, for their profits, and it usually causes worse situations. The Vietnam War and Taliban are good examples for it. It could be possible that America would attack North Korea without thinking about its neighbor countries like South Korea or Japan, and its hidden real aim is just to compete against China which has been developing rapidly and America is getting worried about these days. If it happens, it would be Korean or Japanese who take the biggest damage.

So we need to think about it again carefully.

Not so welcome to Japan any longer

Today’s blog is about the article” Not so welcome to Japan any longer”.

The author claims about the new system which is conducted by Japanese immigration bureau office. This requires foreigners to fingerprinted and photographed at airports when they get into Japan. Not only visitors or workers with proper visas but also most permanent residents have to take this requirement. According to Japanese government, this law is made to keep international terrorists from getting into Japan. However, the author does not think that it will work because immigrant office does not have the database of fingerprints or detailed information of terrorists and if they share that of the U.S., like the article “Will entry check cross the line?” says, that must contains wrong information. Therefore, this system is just going to be considered as a discriminative thing which violates privacy.

Considering those things, this new law should not be executed.

Discrimination In Japan

In the article “Which minority groups face the worst discrimination in Japan”, what is interesting is that foreigners and Japanese people are considering this issue from different angles. People from other countries mainly take nationality or race into consideration, but Japanese people seem to think about only Japanese people who are discriminated. Also, even when only considering those Japanese people, the situation surrounding them seem to affect their views like Natsumi Suzuki who has a handicapped brother.

Mike Dewood says in his response “Ebb and flow of discrimination”, that it depends on where people live which groups people think are discriminated worst. This opinion sounds reliable because many people can be influenced by the situation of the places they live. For example, if you live in the town which has “Buraku”(the area where burakumin live), you see many people who discriminate them, and the ideas of those people have much impression on your own thought. Also in the case of the author, few people in his town could know that he is an American when they see him for the first time, but his nationality, American, let him think they do this because he is an American.

I think those two articles show that many factors affect each person’s thought about this issue, such as nationality, family situation and the place where people live. In other words, thoughts about discrimination or people who are discriminated are different to each person because no one lives in the very same situation.

Four (U.S.) marines investigated for rape

In the response of Manuel Sandoval, he is trying to say that the investigation about this suspicion of rape is unfair and too quick. The reason is the woman was working at a bar and she could have expected what would happen to her if she got out with four marine guys. According to his logic, women who work at bars can be raped and if a woman get out of bar with some men, that means she expects some sexual things with them.

It is obvious that no men have permission to rape a woman even if she works at a bar or she joins the bunch of men. So what he is trying to say is just his own point of view about women, and should not be accepted.

He is also trying to defend this rape by marines in another way. He says the U.S. military is protecting Japan from the aggression of China or North Korea, and taking a very important part, but Japanese people forget it and do not appreciate it much these days. He does not say it in an obvious way, but what he wants to say is that if U.S. armies make some mistakes or commit a crime, they should be treated leniently because they protect Japan and very important for Japanese.

Also here, the way he tries to make his point is just expressing his own view. As Kevin Egan says in his response, having many bases around the world does not mean soldiers who work abroad are allowed to do whatever they want to do. So also in this case, those four marines should be treated fairly.

Why am I still in IES!?

So...today’s topic is why I am in IES. Actually, I didn’t decide to get into IES when we were asked at TOEFL test. I thought we would have the last questionnaire about whether I really wanted to take an IES course or not, but it was the last one and that is why I am here now. At first I was like “Oh my god! I can’t do part time job and little free time!” because at the previous university, I had to study pretty hard and I hated it, so I thought I made the same mistake again. However, now I think I have much free time (that’s not enough, though) and got some good friends here and outside the class, so I am happy to be here in IES a and this university.

I don’t know any other particular reasons why I am still here. Maybe I just don’t want to quit something again...you know if I keep giving up everything I hate, I am going to be a miserable loser, not a fabulous loser. It seems to be funny in a sense, but I don’t want to be like that yet!

Another reason is probably I liked ALT’s classes as a high school student (95% of the reason is he was cute). And at my high school, our English teachers spoke in English almost all the time, but it seemed a little strange to me...like why Japanese teachers are speaking to us in English? So it attracted me that Native English speakers speak English at IES classes, not Japanese teachers.

Anyway, the biggest reason why I am still here is friends!! yay.

School Festival

School festival of our university is almost coming. I do not know what it is like, but maybe fun. I heard some of my classmates will sell Frankfurt there. Oh and we can not have any alcoholic drinks at festival...why? That is all I know about the festival so far. I prefer drive somewhere and watch birds with beer...whatever. Anyway, let's have fun!!

You can watch the performance of the cheer leading club of Kansai Gaidai. Maybe they did it at last year's school festival.

I do not know much about it, but I want to have a party, actually my friends will have some parties...so I have to think about the costume I will wear. Have you ever worn any costumes for Halloween? Hmmm...maybe to be a bunny girl is a good idea I think.

←I found this cute picture on Yahoo!

Or I think Universal Studio Japan has some events on that day, so if you have someone special to go with, just go!!

You can get some information about it on USJ Halloween homepage

Using Gairaigo

I think that using or importing more gairaigo is not good. Originally, the aim of using gairaigo is to express the concepts or ideas from other countries, mainly from western countries, but many Japanese people can not understand the meaning of many gairaigo, even foreigners from English speaking countries find it hard to comprehend. In this situation, I wonder if there is any reason to keep using more gairaigo. As Tomoko Otake says, Japanese people in meiji era could understand the meanings of those new words written in kanji, then why do not we try to express recent gairaigo in kanji? I think we are using those words not because it is easier to express the meanings, but because we can feel like we are getting closer to the West. As Yuichiro Yamada says, I think Japanese people tend to admire almost anything western, and look down upon Asian cultures. I really do not know why Japanese people think western cultures are better than those of Asia. Of course, there are many good things in west countries, but Asian countries have as well. We can not say which culture is better than the other. This worship for the west is making the situation of using more gairaigo which causes more communication problems. I think the most important thing is to change it. This worship for the west is making recent situation. The more we become proud of our own culture, the more we will try to make use of it.

Fabulous Summer Vacation!

Ah actually, my summer holiday was not so fabulous. I could not travel abroad(which was the very thing I really wanted to do) because I did not have enough money...so all I did during the holiday were hang out with my friends, go to bars or clubs and get drunk like I always did in the last semester. the most exciting thing was I made friends with many new exchange students. In August, me and my friends(Haruka, Keiko, Aami and Ryoko...Hiromitsu was supposed to come, too, though) joined the program, Kyoto Tour, and met some new exchange students for the first time. All of them are from the U.S. and as you can see, I was the only boy in the group. We went to Kiyomizu temple first. Of course we draw fortune slips of "love" because the shrine which is located inside the site of the temple and named "Zinushi jinzya" is popular among people who want lovers. I do not talk about the result for some reasons. Anyway, it was a very fun time. After that, we took those American girls to karaoke. They were too embarrassed to sing because they had never been to karaoke, but they seemed to enjoy it(I wish so).

On the same day, I had to say good bye to some friends from other countries. The sweetest friends, Alex and Osian, would come back to their countries(England and Wales). I am already missing them, so when I travel Europe this winter, I will also visit them(this time, I can not miss this plan definitely!)

I also met some friends from high school during this summer, we meet once a few months though. One of them came back to Japan from Indonesia(she was studying folk dance in Bali), and another one would go to Holland to study for one year. It has been almost two and a half year since we graduated, but every time we meet, I even feel like nothing has changed(of course we all have grown up and had many experiences)

I made some plans to meet each of some good friends from previous university, too, because they would start studying abroad from this autumn. Most of them are now studying in Spain because we majored in Spanish. It was a really good time. Gathering and getting drunk together is of course fun, but meeting a friend and have a chat is nice, too. Ah I also want to upload some pictures, but unfortunately I did not take pictures.
Oh and I wore yukata for the first time when I went to firework on the bank of Yodo river. It was too hot and difficult to dance at clubs after that, but I want to wear it again next year. Some of you guys who are using mixi already saw this picture, but I show off it again because it is really cute!(at least for me)

This fabulous lady is one of my good friends. We used to work together at nova which is almost broke now↑

So...other things I did were, as I said, hang out, come to school, drink and get drunk. Do you know the park near the seminar house four? Evey night, many exchange students come and drink there, so if you want make some friends or meet Mari, just get some beer and go there. Mari is always drunk there, I guess. Oh but be careful, many dogs pee and poop on the grass, so check and smell before you sit down. I also recommend Daddy's and Mummy's. Daddy's is the shot bar(like Irish bar) and Mummy's is kind of Izakaya. They are very different, but I am sure you can have fun at both places.

←This shot was taken when me and Haruka doing karaoke at a bar in Umeda. The guy is my friend from previous university.

Finally I got tattoos last Sunday. Me and Yuri.Y went to Shinsaibashi to find a good tattoo shop. We visited three or four tattoo shops, and found the best place in Minami Horie. Hippie Day!!

Today, I want to talk about hippie day. I don't know much about it, but I have heard of it from my friend and thought it's interesting...so I'm going to introduce my plan of hippie day!

On hippie day, me and some friends will have to wear really shabby clothes to express our laziness. If you don't have any clothes like that, you can just make it with some plastic bags.

Also, we can not speak in classes because we would be too lazy to put up our hands. Therefore, we can not smoke for the same reason. We can not do almost anything on hippie day.

However, there is one exception...we can drink(if you are older than 20 years old).

That's my plan(actually me and Haruka's) of hippie day...hmmm...it must be such a lovely day, but we may lose something important. Do you wanna join?

I got the hippie picture on Google

Christina Again!!!

It must be the last time to talk about lovely Christina Aguilera here because I know I have talked about her too much.

Finally, I went to her concert last Monday!! I had been waiting for it so long!! It was fabulous!! As you know, many popular singers(especially from America) do lip sing at concert and focus more on the performance. However, she actually sings usually, and her best attribute is her voice. Of course her performance was amazing, too.

I am also glad that she sang my favorite song "Beautiful" as an encore. I became a bigger fun of her!

Baby hatch

Today's topic is "baby hatch".

A baby hatch is a place where mother can bring and leave their infant children anonymously. This place is safe for babies and there are always some staff to take care of them so that they don't die or are not in any danger at the places where they are abandoned. The aim of this facility is to save unwanted babies from being killed by parents or abortions. There many places like this in Western countries. I think most of us know about baby post which was recently opened in Kumamoto. Some people think it is a good idea, others not.

Here are two responses to this facility...

One is here by the woman from Florida, U.S.

All she wants to say is that baby hatch is not good as you can know from the title "Baby hatch is not the answer" She knows about this issue because she has worked with children and families for more than 20 years, and she now works with developmentally disabled adults, some of whom were abandoned and experienced traumatic separation from parents. She thinks such experiences give children much damage regardless of age, and they will suffer to overcome losses of significant people like parents. So she is saying through her own experience that baby post is not the answer because even if children are abandoned at the safe places and raised by other people, and they will suffer so much and lead a good life eventually.

The other one is here by the woman from Kanagawa, Japan.

She thinks baby hatch is a good idea. She is saying it can be alternative by mentioning the event in Japan some years ago. A junior high school student bore a baby, and she and her boyfriend delivered it secretly in an open-air location. They abandoned it in a nearby temple in cold weather and it died. There was one assumption that the couple were fearful of the consequences of their actions and thus felt that they had no choice but to abandon the infant. So she thinks if there were any facilities like baby hatch, they didn't do such a thing and the baby would not have died. Therefore, she support the idea of baby post.

I agree with the latter opinion. I think the most important thing about this situation is to save as many lives as we can. Even if they will suffer when they grow up, they can still live and there is much possibility for them to lead happy lives. If they die when abandoned, they have nothing more. I think there are many young couples who get unwanted infants. Of course they are irresponsible and selfish, but those babies have no reason to die, so I support the idea of baby post.

Spain!!

Today, I want to introduce my favorite country, Spain, to you with some pictures and links. I went to Spain with two friends in March and April 2006, and stayed there for about 1 month. It was an amazing experience!

Here is the photo I took in Barcelona.

Do you know what it is? Yeah, this is Sagrada Familia. This is the big church constructed by Antoni Gaudí i Cornet(1852-1926) and it has not been completed. It was bigger than I had expected and beautiful. At night It was light-upped, so it became much more beautiful. Oh, but please be careful with gypsies holding a bunch of roses. They would be coming to you saying "Fiesta! Fiesta!" but it might be better for you to ignore them. I found the officail website of Sagrada Familia. Please get more information at El Temple de La Sagrada Familia if you want.

I also got these pictures of Sagrada Familia on yahoo!.

We went to Sevilla, the big city in Andarcia. The atmosphere of Sevilla was much different from that of Barcelona or Madrid. Weather was calmer and more close to the image we often have when we think of Spain like blue sky, white houses or people have a little dark skin and cheerful.

After we visited Granada and Cordoba, we went to Madrid. I recommend you to visit Cranada if you like to visit historical places. In Granada, there is a huge relic named Alhambra de Granada. It remains many vestiges of Islam which spreaded in this region at that time.

Here is the picture of this which I got on Google. I took some pictures, but I lost them.

In Madrid, we watched some flamenco shows. Here is a video of a show. Please watch it!
So, if you are interested in visiting Spain, just do it! It must be a good experience for you.

Singers I like

Today, I'm gonna talk about singers I like with some links. Of course I like some groups and bands, too!

This is Christina Aguilera. I often talk about her these days because I will go to her concert next month and have already got excited. Have you ever listened to her songs? If you have, I am sure that you got surprised at her strong voice. I also admire her talent of making songs and performing. She changed her image every time she created new album. When she released first album, she was like a pure 17 year-old girl singing about romantic love story. However, she changed to be a naughty bitch at second album. I like this album the best. It has many kinds of music from hip-pop to jazz and ballad. Contents of songs deepened, too. I strongly recommend the song "Beautiful" as I said in the previous blog. Anyway, I will be going crazy st her concert!!

Here is P!nk. I like her craziness and aggressiveness! I also like her rough voice which is matching her songs well. I have her newest album and like songs "stupid girls" and "who knew". She is mocking some famous celebs in the promotion video of stupid girl and it is so funny. Every time I go to karaoke, I sing these two songs. Her live performances are coll, too, so if you want to watch some of them, please go to youtube.com and you can find them easily!

Last, Justin Timberlake. I think some of my classmates like him, too! He is so HOT!! His voice is a little rough and higher than average, and it is his best point I think. Oh and we can not forget about his dance!! Anyway, if you wanna listen to his songs, I can lend you his CD.

School Festival

This is the picture I took at my high school festival. It was about 3 years ago...I was a little younger and fresher, I am still cute though.
We played "Genzi Monogatari" as a musical show. We created it be ourselves from a scenario to a dance, clothes entirely. It was really hard and busy, but it was the best time at high school for me. We practiced hard for a month and could get a first prize! Yay!
I played a vindictive spirit with some classmates who were fun and crazy! I was brain of them.
I wish I could have the experience like this again someday!

My favorite music video

Today, I wanna introduce my favorite music video.

Please watch this video↓↓

In Scott's class, we have to make a music video and our group chose the song "How To Save A Life" by The Fray. I had not know even their name before Akinori and Yuri recommended it, but now this band is already my favorite.

I like this song especially. I can't explain the meaning of this song exactly because it has so many messages, so everyone can has his or her own interpretation. And this music video is really impressive to me, too. Mixing sad, angry, happy faces is like also shakes audience, I think.

Oh I also want you to watch the video of "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera. Whether you like it or not, I'm sure that you will feel something emotional.

Anyway, we will make our video for this music by our own interpretation. Please look forward to it!

Commercial for SK-Ⅱ(an analysis)

Today, I would like to talk about the commercial of SK-Ⅱ which is an expensive skin lotion. You can sometimes see this commercial on Japanese TV.

First, please watch it ↓↓

Target Audience

This commercial is about skin lotion. More women use skin care things than men, so this advertisement is mainly directed to women.

And this product is especially for middle aged women who are around this actress age. Women around this age have more worries or troubles about their skin than young women do.

Also, women who want to get better skin condition in a short term because they have plans like a party or something to meet people are the target, too, as it says "in one week, you can fresh skin".

Possibly guys who want better skin condition could be target, too.

So this commercial is directed to many groups of people, but especially to middle-aged women.

Authority

Here I wanna mention authority of this commercial.

I am sure that most people notice this commercial is using a famous Japanese actress named Kaori Momoi. She is famous for her character, the style of acting and her beautiful skin. She has been choosen as a beautiful actresses in some fashion magazines.

In addition to the use of a famous actress, this product's name"SK-Ⅱ" itself can be authority, too because it is famous in Japan. This name is well known in many countries like America, U.K, Australia, China, Korea, Taiwan and Singapore.

In conclusion, this commercial is appealing to audience by using the actress who is famous for her good skin. And its product name can attract audience.

Emotion

Emotion which this commercial is trying to give audience is beautiful, fresh and happy.

First, you may think her skin is beautiful at first sight. Then think she looks fresh, not only her skin but also herself. And she is even dancing in the middle and smiling happily in the ending.

It is trying to have audience think her skin makes her look beautiful and fresh, and this makes her happy. And then she looks beautiful totally from these good factors such as beauty, freshness and hapinnes.

Logic/information

This commercial gives audience information how to use this skin lotion. It says that smooth this lotion along a flow of lymph and massage your face. It makes your skin smooth in only seven days.

And this way of using is an application of the way of pasting paper on something flat without glue.

Evaluation

I think this commercial gives little information, but appealing to audience by using good authority. And the structure of colors in this ad has a good balance and looks clean and beautiful. So audience find beauty in the actress and also in background.

On a scale of 1-10, I would give this commercial 7.

As I said above, this commercial appealing sucessfully in respect of visual things, but if it gave a little more information about product, it would be better.
